Symbols, Symbols, Everywhere!

One of the challenging yet exciting parts of reading great literature is reading beyond the literal and discovering the ways in which the author's text is working on the figurative (or symbolic) level. As you read Beloved and Invisible Man, try to identify and point out possible symbols to your peers. Pulitzer Prize winner Toni Morrison is no slouch, and she definitely doesn't neglect her symbolism. For your first post, you may respond to the questions below or comment on questions or other thoughts you had when reading the beginning of Beloved. Try to include comments and questions that will spark discussion and get people thinking. You may also choose to respond to the comments of your peers (respectfully of course) with your own interpretations and ideas.

*Discuss how color is symbolic in the opening of the novel.
*How is the address 124 symbolic? (That's my riddle to you...think about it.)

Hi this is Kristin Rozanski. Wow first comment. To answer the "riddle" about the symbolism of the address 124, I believe that this is expressing Sethe's children. 4 would be the number of kids Sethe has had; Buglar, Howard, the baby, and Denver. The number 2 I believe represents the kids that have ran away; so Buglar and Howard. And finally the number 1 represents the only child Sethe has left, Denver, who is Sethe's whole life. That address helps Sethe remember her life and all her children in it tjat is why it is so symbolic.

Very impressive riddle solving! Also, as you continue to read (and discover the major shocker in the middle of the novel), think about what is missing...

Thank u speel chekr police- I'm sure I'll continue to need your help as time goes on.

i love how color plays such an important part in this book. when i was reading this book i felt like the mood of the story was brown because the most of the people are living rustic lives and there is not much color anywhere. i also thought it was symbolic when baby suggs is fianlly freed and she then notices colors that she had never had time for. as though once you are free then your soul and mind are open for the first time.

The number 124 stands for the children of Sethe. One of her children died, two of them were run off, and there were four in all.

The colors seems to represent all that is a good and evil in people. Something aside from black and white. symbolizing all that we are without the ability to harm those around us.

...Might be a stretch, but oh wel
